The original Funky Puppy was designed to be faithful to the effects circuits of the long discontinued Australian made Chunk Systems Brown Dog and Agent 00Funk bass pedals with the added convenience of the link footswitch to enable the unique feature between the two that originally required an extra jumper cable.
The MKII has many new features born from customer feedback and my own experience of repairing originals, building and using these circuits over the last few years. It's designed to give players the maximum potential of the original circuits, be easier to dial in, more consistent and more reliable.
New features:
Completely redesigned power section
One often missed thing in the instructions for dialing in the 00Funk was that it worked best with a power supply that was outputting exactly 9 volts. Most decent (and crap) 9v power supplies and fresh batteries will actually measure around 9.6 volts. Even this small difference is enough to significantly change the range of some of the controls.
This new design ensures the effects circuits always receive exactly 9V from any supply putting out 9.2V or more. This covers virtually every pedal power supply on the market. If yours sags below that under load, or you're running a long daisy chain, a 12V supply will also work.
Input and Level controls on Envelope Filter side
The 00Funk envelope filter is quite sensitive to input level and doesn't work well with extra hot signals. The new Input control allows you to cut the input gain when inputting extra loud signals into the filter. It also works as a sensitivity control making it easier to dial in any instrument.
The Level control acts as a master volume control, it boosts signal after around 2 o'clock to allow you to make up for any lost volume if you had to use the input cut.
Envelope Filter Effects Loop
This effects loop allows you to place other pedals in between the filter and the envelope follower so they won't affect tracking. This is essentially allowing you to do what the Link footswitch does with the Fuzz side with any other pedal of your choice. Add pitch, modulation and delays for infinite unique synth tones.
Relay based True Bypass Switching
The switching for both effects circuits has been updated to a soft-touch switch relay based setup for higher durability and dead silent switching.
I have never owned the 00 Funk or the brown dog, but wanted one ever since bassfuzz.com reviewed it way back when. I missed the ship with chunk systems was around. Fast forward, the skinny puppy surpassed my expectations, I had a mutron IV, it was ok, but for me I could never get it to where I wanted it. I do not have this problem with the skinny puppy, and furthermore it reminds me of the EHX bass harmonic synth. I can do the bass part from Climbing the Walls by Radiohead with the skinny puppy and an octave pedal.
The pedal is so sensitive to playing dynamics that I can control the envelope with more or less hand pressure when playing. I'm still trying to get the hang of the filter going the other way, although it does remind me of the EHX bass balls in that mode.
In any case, it was not cheap, but this pedal is one that I am real happy with, one that I have not had any regrets about getting, and it's been a few weeks now.
I have read that there was an additional switch on these that focused the mids on the fuzz, but there is a gap in the manual and the switch is not on the pedal anymore, I wonder what happened?
I've not had the pleasure of playing through any Chunk Systems gear, but based on my internet research, and some samples posted on Talkbass, the Funky Puppy seems to nail it.
I have never experienced a filter like this one. The response, range, and tone are pretty unusual in my experience. I'm smitten. It's possible to find settings that cause the filter to open and close in a very non- linear fashion. Squelch yields a similar result to Resonance on other devices, but also has a notably different character than resonance. There is much more deep diving to be done. The Fuzz is a solid offering that pairs extremely well with the filter, and the envelope link plays a huge role. What a cool, fun, musical device, and the Hammered White finish is a nice bonus.
what a SUPERBE circuit, and the link switch is a stroke of genius. I'm getting the sounds out of it, that I want. Much better than the 3Leaf Trifecta (which I do love, but don't give me the combined synth sound, that I want).
And WAY better than the overhyped MXR bass synth, analog tracking.... Well, there is no tracking! It just does, what I play. Perfect!
